Why Should Scientific Research Be Translated? - Ordentop

Communication is the core of any scientific community. It is very important to share scientific discoveries, articles and developments not only in English but also in other languages.

So why is it worth translating scientific discoveries into different languages?

1. It does not limit potential collaboration partners

Large scale research projects may require international collaboration (e.g. Large Hadron Collider or vaccine COVID-19 work). Even small projects can benefit from sharing data with teams from distant countries.

2. You will know your competitors

It is important to monitor research papers in different languages, so you may find out that a competing team at Beijing University is working on the same research you are doing. They are writing articles in Mandarin and you are reading the literature in English. By making your results available in different languages, you get competitors from whom you can distinguish your work (or with whom you can cooperate).

3. You can get funding or take part in an international competition

In order to get the biggest monetary support in the form of research grants and venture capital, think about expanding your network globally. Although English is accepted as the universal language for research papers, you will still make an impression on investors and award organizations if you can demonstrate your willingness to share your ideas freely within the global research community.

4. Limiting international publication

There are many academic journals that publish their work in languages other than English. One article counts more than 9000 peer-reviewed scientific journals published in languages such as French, German, Spanish and Chinese.

For business reasons or simply to spread ideas, neglecting to translate scientific articles can be a mistake. The scientific community is truly international, and you should be international too.
