Translation and dubbing of wartime documentaries - Ordentop

The translation of documentaries is radically different from the translation of fiction films. A documentary is based on actual locations, events, people and facts. Here the translator has a more difficult task, because there is a need for a thorough study of the issue at hand, with an enormous amount of fine detail. Without this, it will not be possible to translate the text accurately and correctly, conveying exactly what the author wanted to convey.

In documentaries, it is necessary to determine the addressee — the target audience who will watch and, most importantly, listen to the material. For example, if the audience is teenagers, the translator will use natural language for young people, but if the film is a scientific one, he or she will have to operate with complex terms. At the same time, the translator must retain the meaning, the manner of transmission and the author’s intention.
